Ellesmere Port Fact File
The industrial town of Ellesmere Port is situated on the Wirral Peninsula on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal. It is also the northern terminus of the Shropshire Union Canal. The Ellesmere Canal was built by Thomas Telford and William Jessop to connect the rivers Mersey, Dee and Severn at Whitby Locks. The port then became known as Ellesmere Port although the connection to the Severn was never finished.
There has been settlement in the area since the eleventh century.
The world's largest collection of canal boats is housed at The National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port.
