Congleton Fact File
There has been settlement in the Congleton area since prehistoric times. There is a Neolithic tomb in the area known as 'Bridestones'.
In the Saxon period, the town was held by Godwin, Earl of Wessex.
Congleton was under the control of the de Lacy family in the thirteenth century. It was granted a charter in 1272 by the third Earl of Lincoln, allowing it to hold markets and fayres.
In 1649, former Mayor of Congleton, John Bradshaw, was appointed Lord President of the Court which tried and condemned to death, Charles I.
During the eighteenth century, Congleton became an important centre for the textile industry.
In the mid nineteenth century, the railway came to the area, giving the town the advantage of being on the main line linking Manchester with London.
