Crewe grew up as a town on the back of the railways, and was for many years a base for the locomotive industry. It wasn't until 1843 that Joseph Locke formally planned out the town.
Rolls-Royce had a factory in Crewe from 1946 until 2002.
The London and North Western Railway donated land to establish the town's Queen's Park, which was laid out by engineer Francis Webb.
In 1911, the Lyceum Theatre was built in the centre of Crewe. It is now conserved as a Grade II listed building.
To the east of the town there is Crewe Hall, a Grade I listed Jacobean mansion.
