Northwich Fact File
Northwich is situated at the confluence of the rivers Weaver and Dane and in Roman times it was known as 'Condate', which menas 'confluence'.
The area around Northwich has been mined for salt since Roman times and the settlement grew up around the river crossing point. Pumping hot water into the ground to extract the salt as brine in the nineteenth century caused subsidence problems.
Northwich is documented in the Domesday Book as part of the hundred of Middlewich.
Up until 1237 the Earls of Chester owned the manor of Northwich.
During the English Civil War, Northwich was fortified. The garrison was lead by Parliamentarian, Sir William Bereton.
