Nantwich Fact File
The Romans occupied the area of Nantwich and made use of its rich deposits of salt. The names 'wich' and 'wych' are used to denote 'brine springs' or 'wells'.
In 1583 fire destroyed part of the town. Queen Elizabeth I contributed personally to the town's rebuilding.
The Battle of Natwich took place in 1644 between Parliamentarian and Royalist forces.
There are a number of listed timber framed buildings surviving in Nantwich. The Grade I listed, St Mary's Church, dates from the 14th century.
In the Town Square, you will come across the museum, which houses exhibits dating back to Roman times.
