Altrincham Fact File
Altricham's origins date back to Roman times. In the late thirteenth century, Altrincham was established as a market town. There is still a market in the town today. The oldest parts of the town are centred around the Old Market Place and Church Street.
Altrincham developed further with the extension of the Bridgewater Canal to the town in 1765 and also with the arrival of the railways in 1849 and subsequent expansion of the network. The industrial centre of the town was at Broadheath.
Although part of the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford in Greater Manchester, historically the town was part of Cheshire.
The town became a base for commuters into Manchester in the eighteenth century.
The National Trust's Dunham Massey Hall, on the outskirts of Altrincham, is a Grade I listed building, built in the eighteenth century in the Georgian style.
