Cheadle Fact File
There has been occupation in the Cheadle area since the Iron Age and later the Romans moved into the area.
The town name of 'Cheadle' comes from 'Chedle', itself a corruption of 'Chad' Hill'. St. Chad preached in the area in the seventh century.
Geoffrey de Chedle was lord of the manor in the late thirteenth century. His two daughters inherited half of the manor each after the death of Geoffrey's wife.
St Mary's church dates back to 1290, though it was rebuilt in the sixteenth century.
Cheadle town hall is based in the Victorian Abney Hall built in 1847.
