Chester Fact File
Chester is situated on the River Dee and was originally a Roman fort called 'Deva Victrix', founded in the first century. The town's four main roads were laid out around this time.
The Saxons gave Chester its name and fortified the town against the Danes in the fifth century after the Romans left.
Chester was one of the last towns in England to fall to the Normans during the conquest.
Werburgh, the patron saint of Chester, is buried in Chester Cathedral.
The Newtown area of Chester was the industrial centre of the town during the Industrial Revolution.
